We brought the 1/2” x 5” x 24” Black Walnut Solid Hardwood Unfinished board into our shop with one question in mind: does it behave like true walnut should? Out of the package, the dark chocolate color and subtle grain pattern felt promising—rich enough for display pieces, but not so busy that it fights a design. The 1/2-inch thickness gives us room for crisp edges on scroll saw projects, while the 24-inch length is practical for small signs, boxes, and laser-engraved plaques. Because it arrives unfinished, we can test stains, oils, or clear coats without surprises. In this review, we’ll share how flat it is, how it cuts, and whether it’s worth stocking.
