DIY Wooden Lanterns: How to Create Timeless Rustic Charm with This Weekend Project

There’s something magical about the warm glow of a lantern that transforms an ordinary space into a cozy sanctuary. At Crafted by Grain, we’ve noticed wooden lanterns with glass panels trending across Pinterest boards dedicated to rustic home decor—and for good reason! These versatile pieces add instant character to any room while creating that sought-after ambiance that makes a house feel like home. Today, I’m sharing how you can craft your own wooden lantern that rivals those high-end home decor stores (at a fraction of the cost!).

Why Wooden Lanterns Are Having a Pinterest Moment

The wooden lantern with glass panels has become a Pinterest sensation, and it’s not hard to see why. These pieces hit the sweet spot of several trending design movements:

  • Rustic-Modern Fusion: The combination of natural wood with clean glass panels bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design sensibilities.
  • Sustainable Decor Movement: As more homeowners seek eco-friendly alternatives to mass-produced items, handcrafted wooden pieces have gained tremendous popularity.
  • Versatile Styling: These lanterns work in virtually any space—from farmhouse kitchen tables to minimalist mantels to boho outdoor patios.
  • Year-Round Appeal: Unlike seasonal decor pieces, wooden lanterns provide ambient lighting and visual interest throughout all seasons.
  • DIY-Friendly: The relatively straightforward construction makes this an approachable project for woodworking enthusiasts of various skill levels.

The natural, earthy tones and warm lighting create that cozy, hygge-inspired ambiance that performs exceptionally well in today’s visually-driven social media landscape. It’s the perfect blend of form and function.

How to Create Your Own Wooden Lantern with Glass Panels

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Four 1×2 pine boards (for the frame corners)
  • Four 1×2 pine boards (for the top frame)
  • One 1×6 pine board (for the base)
  • Four glass panels (can be purchased pre-cut at hardware stores)
  • Small hinges for the door
  • Small door latch
  • Wood stain of your choice (we recommend a warm walnut or weathered gray)
  • Wood glue
  • Fine grit sandpaper
  • Wood screws
  • Silicone adhesive (for securing glass panels)
  • Optional: decorative top hardware

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare Your Wood

Begin by cutting your wood pieces to size. For a medium-sized lantern (approximately 12″ tall), cut your corner supports to 12″ length, your top frame pieces to 6″ each, and create a 6″x6″ square from your 1×6 for the base. Sand all pieces thoroughly, paying special attention to the edges for a smooth finish.

2. Create the Base Frame

Attach the four corner supports vertically to each corner of your base using wood glue and screws driven in from the bottom (this hides the screw heads). Ensure your corners are square using a carpenter’s square before the glue sets.

3. Build the Top Frame

Create a square frame with your top pieces using pocket holes or simple butt joints secured with glue and screws. This will create the roof of your lantern. Attach to the top of your vertical supports.

4. Prepare for the Glass

Measure and cut small wooden strips to create ledges inside the frame where your glass panels will sit. These should be attached about 1/4″ in from the outer edge of your frame, creating a lip for the glass to rest against.

5. Create a Door

Designate one side as your door. Instead of permanently attaching the glass on this side, create a frame using thin strips of wood that will hold the glass panel. Attach this frame to the lantern structure using small hinges.

6. Stain and Finish

Apply your chosen wood stain following the manufacturer’s instructions. For a rustic look, consider distressing the wood slightly before staining. After the stain dries completely, apply a clear polyurethane finish for protection and longevity.

7. Install Glass Panels

Once everything is dry, apply a small bead of silicone adhesive to the wooden ledges you created, then carefully place your glass panels. For the door panel, secure the glass to the wooden door frame you created. Allow the adhesive to cure completely.

8. Add Final Touches

Install a small latch on the door for secure closing. If desired, add decorative hardware to the top of the lantern for hanging or carrying. Consider adding a small battery-operated LED candle for a safe, warm glow.

Styling Your Wooden Lantern

Your handcrafted wooden lantern is remarkably versatile. Here are some of our favorite ways to incorporate it into your home:

  • Fireplace Mantel: Group different-sized lanterns with candles of varying heights for a layered, dimensional look.
  • Dining Table Centerpiece: Place your lantern atop a wooden serving board with seasonal greenery for an effortless tablescape.
  • Entryway Welcome: Position a larger lantern on your entryway console to create a warm greeting for guests.
  • Bathroom Ambiance: Use a smaller version to add spa-like atmosphere to your bathroom countertop.
  • Outdoor Living: If sealed properly, these lanterns can bring rustic charm to covered patios and porches.

Customize Your Lantern Design

What makes this project truly special is how easily it can be customized to match your personal aesthetic:

  • For a modern farmhouse look: Use a whitewash technique on the wood and matte black hardware.
  • For coastal vibes: Choose a driftwood gray stain and add rope details to the top.
  • For industrial edge: Use darker stains and add metal corner brackets or decorative nails.
  • For Scandinavian simplicity: Leave the wood natural or use a very light stain with minimal hardware.
